"The Artist" has amassed so much pre-Oscar bling that it seems like a shoo-in, but never underestimate the Academy’s love of a feel-good social message, and don’t rule out an upset by "The Help." "Hugo"? My hunch is that too many voters watched the 2-D screener DVD and thus missed a sizable part of the magic.

This is the most self-conscious group of nominees in more than a decade. Where’s "Drive" or "Bridesmaids" or "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"? We’re left with "The Artist," a Hollywood movie from France that the people who give us our movies wish they had made. The braver choice would be Terrence Malick’s imperfect tower of artistic polarization, which is a movie better built to last forever.
