Thomas Van Dyck, the newest member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s bass section, grew up believing that any music lesson is a good lesson even if it involves different genres, styles, and instruments.

“Ultimately, the benefit is from keeping an open mind and allowing yourself to be influenced and to take what you can from different types of music education to help you reach your goals,” Van Dyck says.

As a kid he tried a garage band, then old English-style choral singing, then jazz and bebop, before zeroing in on the double bass.

But Van Dyck wasn’t certain that orchestral music was his bag until he joined the New World Symphony in Miami, as a college senior in 2003, and later studied under classical music greats at Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home in Western Massachusetts.
