How do you mark a BossToneS birthday and nosh on some of the “best BBQ in the country?”
Throw a massive party from June 20-22, call it the Phantom Gourmet BBQ & Music Festival, and get the Mighty Mighty Bosstones themselves to headline it.
Bosstones frontman and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” announcer Dicky Barrett turns 50 on June 21, giving the day and the performance double meaning. The event will also be noted as Dicky Barrett’s Birthday Bash.
Bosstones’ bassist Joe Gittleman was already planning a surprise party for Barrett when the group decided it wanted to play another summer show like last year’s Outside the Box festival, which won’t return to the Hub this year.
“It was kind of crazy. When the opportunity to play City Hall Plaza came up, I was in the process of planning a surprise party for Dicky’s Birthday,” Gittleman said in a statement. “My initial response was that we’d be unavailable to play the show. It took a minute but my brain kicked in.”
Barrett says he’s pumped to return home from Los Angeles, where he works full time, and he’s heard that there are some surprises up his friends’ sleeves.
“There’s a couple surprises going on but I guess those will probably be surprising me too,” Barrett told Boston.com. “I think there are going to be some special guests and people up on stage that I’m not supposed to know about.”
According to Barrett, Kimmel, who has been known to play the clarinet on stage with the Bosstones, may even make an appearance.
Phantom Gourmet, Inc. founder Dave Andelman said the vibe of the festival is going to be “off the hook.”
Andelman created the Boston-based food review company and television program in 1993 and said that taking this event “to another level is unbelievably exciting.”
BBQ creators come from all over the country and as far as Australia to present their foods to attendees. Other attractions will include performances by The Gaslight Anthem and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages.
Admission fees will differ depending on the time of day and the day itself. Get all of the ticket information on the Phantom Gourmet website.
