When 17-year-old Brian Transeau entered Berklee College of Music in 1990, his fellow students regarded the Maryland native as a full-blown oddity. Here was a classical-music prodigy, enrolled at the school to study jazz harmony, who sat in his dorm on Hemenway Street ripping apart synthesizers and fooling around with computers instead of jamming on a guitar or practicing trumpet.
