Sacred songs, down to the roots

Matthew Myer Boulton, music director of Sweet the Sound, wants to give folks a chance to sing with their ancestors. In practical terms, that means he would like people to sing along to the sacred American roots music that is the group's specialty.

The ensemble takes its name from the lyrics of the hymn ''Amazing Grace." The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Wellesley Congregational Church, at 2 Central St.

Its repertoire includes bluegrass, gospel, old-time country, shape note hymns, and originals inspired by the classics.

The music favored by Sweet the Sound has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts since the success of films like ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and ''Cold Mountain." Within the genre, diversity can be found.

A typical Sweet the Sound show has the band moving from African-American spirituals, to a Hank Williams tune, to an 1846 shape note hymn. Vocals and harmonies are accompanied by upright bass, piano, guitar, and fiddle.

The performance is free. For information call 781-235-1988, ext. 11.
