Esperanza Spalding : at Scullers, June 5. The summer jazz schedule showcases contrasting approaches to the jazz bass, with two of the instrument's elders and one of its fast-rising new stars on deck. Youth is served first with Spalding, who at 23 teaches at Berklee and has exploded onto the scene this past year. Ron Carter Trio : at Regattabar, July 13-14. At the other end of the arc of experience, the most-recorded jazz bassist is Carter, who was a member of the era-defining Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s and went on to play in every setting from classical to hip-hop. 617-395-7757 , regattabarjazz.com

Charlie Haden with Paul Bley : at Regattabar, Aug. 3-4. Rounding out the bass master class is a visit from Haden, the polymath whose work stretches from avant-garde to Americana, with a quality of lyricism and insight that can only be described as true soul. Joining him is pianist Bley. The two cut their teeth together in the Los Angeles avant-garde in the late 1950s, and each has gone on to a career at once uncompromising and generous, low-key and deeply aware. 617-395-7757 , regattabar jazz.com

Montreal International Jazz Festival : June 28-July 8. As usual, this festival offers a menu of nearly overwhelming richness. The first weekend includes jazz monuments Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, and Keith Jarrett; innovators Joshua Redman and Mina Agossi ; and new global-music icons Manu Chao and Ojos de Brujo . JVC Jazz Festival -- Newport : Aug. 10-12. The Newport festival offers a particularly strong lineup this year as well. It marks the 50th anniversary of the 1957 edition with all-star homages to Ellington, Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday; off the main stage, the Mingus Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller is also not to be missed. Discover Jazz Festival : June 1-10.
