Wareham's favorites, past and present
Musician Dean Wareham shares suggestions for essential tracks from his former bands, Galaxie 500 and Luna, and his current duo, Dean & Britta.
Galaxie 500 (left): My favorite Galaxie 500 album is the first one, "Today," recorded in three days at Noise New York and produced by Kramer. It contains my favorite Galaxie 500 songs: "Temperature's Rising," "Tugboat," and our interpretation of Jonathan Richman's "Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste." We had no idea how to make a record, but somehow this turned out special.
Luna (above): My favorite Luna disc is our third, "Penthouse," a sparkly, moody album that works from track one all the way to track 11. Tom Verlaine of Television and Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab make guest appearances. I am also fond of the final Luna album, "Rendezvous." I didn't love it when we were recording it because the band was on the verge of breaking apart, but with hindsight I think it is one of our best. It captures the band live in studio with minimal overdubs.
Dean & Britta (inset): I am very proud of "L'Avventura," a record that was recorded somewhat haphazardly, without a clear plan, but finished with Tony Visconti at the mixing desk.
