April 30, 2008

Maybe you two hepcats already know this is Jazz Week in Boston. (If you don't, check jazzboston.org/about/jazzweek2008-events.asp.) Either way, Daddy-o and his baby could use a midweek break, so why not make today an all jazz, all the time groove.

Get the lowdown at lunchtime at the Boston Public Library, where musician and educator Emmett Price III will give a talk called "From Jazz to Hip Hop and Beyond: Why Jazz Matters in the 21st Century." Noon. Free. Rabb Lecture Hall, 700 Boylston, Boston. bpl.org

This evening, make your way to one of our favorite French bistros, Les Zygomates, where the Yoko Miwa Trio will be playing from 6 to 10 p.m. No cover. Start with the salad maison with walnuts ($7) and go on to the trout with sauce grenoblois ($25), steak frites ($23, $36) or cassoulet with sausage, duck confit, and bacon ($25). Dinner 6-10:30 p.m., 129 South St., 617-542-5108. winebar.com

Then, head across town to the Berklee Performance Center for a concert celebrating the new CD "Common Ground, " released by Berklee's student-run jazz label. Six Jazz Revelations Records bands will play blues and jazz influenced by a host of international styles. Dig this description from faculty adviser Kevin McCluskey of the new CD: "A bass player from Korea plays blues influenced jazz with a guitarist from Slovenia. A Japanese piano player swings a gospel piece with her American compatriots. A Frenchman gets low down on some swampy New Orleans funk." 8:15 p.m. $10. 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. 617-747-2261. berklee.edu/events

If you still have a jones for more jazz (yes, the night is young) catch the Six Figures Funk Band at Wally's Café, playing until 1:30 a.m. No cover, 427 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. 617-424-1408. wallyscafe.com

Now surely you cool cats can get over the midweek hump.
