Critics' picks - classical music
Boston Landmarks Orchestra - Just when most of Boston's classical ensembles are going on summer vacation, this orchestra comes alive with a series of free programs at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. The season begins Wednesday with Charles Ansbacher leading a mostly Copland program including the "Lincoln Portrait" with Governor Deval Patrick as narrator. Also on the bill: Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. At 7 p.m., 617-520-2200 or landmarksorchestra.org.
Tanglewood - The Boston Symphony Orchestra's conductor emeritus Bernard Haitink presides over two-thirds of next weekend's BSO programming. Friday, he leads an all-Beethoven concert featuring the Symphony No. 6 and the Triple Concerto, with a young power trio of soloists: Julia Fischer (violin), Jonathan Biss (piano), and Daniel Müller-Schott (cello). Saturday night, he leads Mahler's Second Symphony, and next Sunday afternoon, James Levine takes over with music by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Bach, with pianist Peter Serkin joining as soloist. 617-266-1200 or tanglewood.org.
