Brother J

July 7, 2008

At tonight's installment of Vibation, a night at Church that features DJ Bradford James's mix of Afro-beat, neo-soul, and hip-hop music, you can see Brother J, an underground hip-hop star from the group X-Clan (they were around in the 1980s and '90s). Like Public Enemy, the under-the-radar rap act used music to make statements about issues of race and class, so expect Brother J to deliver some heavy material. Also on the bill is the local hip-hop group Foundation Movement and Roxbury lyricist Michael "Warrior" Bonds. 8 p.m. $10. Church, 69 Kilmarnock St., Boston. 617-236-7600. churchofboston.com
