Odes to Odetta

Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan have cited Odetta as a major influence on their careers. An archival clip of the folksinger, songwriter, acoustic guitarist, hand clapper, and human rights activist was featured in Martin Scorsese's Dylan documentary, "No Direction Home." The direction to take today is to Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park where the legendary folk artist will open the summer performing arts series. IntaAfrika, a local troupe of African drummers featuring Stephen O'Neal, opens the show. Lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics are encouraged. 6 p.m. (series continues through Aug. 19). Free. Franklin Park's Valley Gates, next to the Playstead, Boston. (Rain location is Reggie Lewis Center at Roxbury Community College). 617-282-2881. franklinparkcoalition.org
