Murphy mania

Mark Murphy has rubbed shoulders with a lot of famous folks. Sammy Davis Jr. discovered the jazz vocalist at a jam session in Murphy's hometown of Syracuse, N.Y., in 1953. Ella Fitzgerald described him as her equal, and the late, great tap dancer Gregory Hines once jumped onstage to join him for an impromptu duet in Las Vegas. The six-time Grammy-nominated singer should be in equally illustrious company tonight when he performs two sets at the Sahara Club in Methuen. Accompanying Murphy will be Emmy-winning Pops pianist Brad Hatfield, Somerville bassist Greg Loughman, and New Hampshire drummer Les Harris Jr. The Methuen club serves a full menu of Arabic and American food. 7:30-10:30 p.m. $10. Sahara Club. 34 Bates St., Methuen. 603-898- 1591. jockosjazz.com
