Celebrity Series sets 2009-10 schedule

Next season, the
Five events are set to take place in the Paramount Theater, which is currently undergoing renovation and scheduled to reopen in spring 2010. These include the cellist Maya Beiser with a multimedia recital, Max Raabe with the Palast Orchester of Berlin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Black Grace Dance Company, and the Danish Dance Theatre. Other dance events next season include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as well as the Mark Morris Dance Group performing "Mozart Dances" with the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music.
Besides the Berlin Philharmonic, which will play works by Brahms and Schoenberg, the series will also present the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly with piano soloist Nelson Freire. Among the chamber ensembles scheduled to perform will be the Emerson and St. Lawrence string quartets, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, the Imani Winds, and a trio made up of Emerson players David Finckel and Philip Setzer with pianist Wu Han. Rob Kapilow's "What Makes It Great?" series will return with two programs: one devoted to the Mendelssohn Octet, with the Borromeo and Ariel string quartets, and one given over to the music of Cole Porter.
The first Celebrity Series offering will be a recital on Oct. 4 by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, part of a farewell tour, with soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. Also performing recitals next season will be violinist Itzhak Perlman as well as pianists Ingrid Fliter, Emanuel Ax, and Richard Goode, who will present a duo program with pianist Jonathan Biss.
Suzanne Vega comes to Sanders Theatre; jazz violinist Regina Carter will play with the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour; the Luciana Souza Trio will perform; and Broadway troubadour Brian Stokes Mitchell returns to the series. So do Bobby McFerrin and David Sedaris. In a program called "A Life in the Theatre," Stephen Sondheim will reminisce about his career with New York Times columnist Frank Rich. The season also includes the Vienna Choir Boys and the a cappella vocal ensemble Chanticleer.
