The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer season kicks off tonight with James Levine leading an all-Tchaikovsky program that includes the Symphony No. 6 and the Piano Concerto No. 1 with Yefim Bronfman as soloist. On the afternoon of July 5, Levine returns to the podium for Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring’’ and the Brahms Violin Concerto with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist. Later Sunday, at an hour when other soloists might be relaxing over dinner, Tetzlaff will return to Ozawa Hall with the first of three programs traversing the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas, partnered by pianist Alexander Lonquich. The program includes the first four Sonatas, and Tetzlaff’s Beethoven series continues July 7 and 9. 617-266-1200, www.tanglewood.org

ASTON MAGNA

Along with a few Handel arias, the festival presents John Gay’s satirical “Beggar’s Opera’’ of 1728 (the same work that was later adapted by Weill and Brecht to create “The Threepenny Opera.’’) The cast includes Nancy Armstrong, Kristen Watson, Deborah Rentz-Moore, Frank Kelley, David Ripley, and Robert Honeysucker The chamber ensemble will be led by violinist Daniel Stepner.
