To celebrate its 50th anniversary, George Wein’s folk festival is heavy on vanguard artists (Joan Baez, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott) and ones who will carry the torch (Neko Case, Iron & Wine). It’s an excellent mix that could make for some interesting impromptu partnerships. A few highlights:

TOMORROW

Gillian Welch (above, 2:40 p.m., Fort Stage) The mistress of the murder ballad always enchants. Expect the Newport vet to pop up in several sets to add distinctive harmony vocals.

Mavis Staples (3:15 p.m., Harbor Stage) The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame R&B singer has been on a winning streak in the last few years with new material and old soul. Let her take you there.

Fleet Foxes (4 p.m., Fort Stage) The critically beloved Seattle beard rockers bring their harmony-laden, indie sensibility to the big stage.

SUNDAY

Balfa Toujours (2:10 p.m., Waterside Stage) Try not to swing as this Louisiana-bred band whips up a Cajun feast.

Guy Clark (12:45 p.m., Harbor Stage) A master songwriter whose tunes have been covered by everyone from the Everly Brothers to Johnny Cash.

Pete Seeger (6 p.m., Fort Stage) At 90, one of the bedrock members of the folk movement is still going strong. He’ll be playing with grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger and longtime friend Judy Collins.
