God bless Courtney Love. She hasn’t released an album since 2004’s tongue-in-cheek-titled “America’s Sweetheart,’’ but that hasn’t stopped the spitfire from asserting her stature in rock ’n’ roll.
Gossip blogs were aglow last week when Love started, out of the blue, a Twitter feud with Aussie rockers the Veronicas and “Gossip Girl’’ actress-turned-musician Taylor Momsen, all of whom are at least two decades Love’s junior. Love’s beef? She doesn’t think the up-and-comers have the juice to make it as rock stars; they play “crappy pop,’’ she claims.
Truth be told, she’s probably right, but you can’t help but feel that her unprovoked tirade smacks of jealousy and insecurity. No one’s going to deny Love’s talent - for her music and for stoking the public’s interest in her - but does the following barb sound necessary? Punctuation and spelling are all hers, by the way:
“I will do MY job you kids runalong and find your own little jobs whne you can even THINK that you can play a ROCK show for 3.5 hrs call me.’’
Love later told New York magazine that she didn’t mean to pick on 16-year-old Momsen, since she’s a “little girl.’’ Come on now. After hearing the supportive things Chrissie Hynde (Love’s idol) had to say about her new tour mates - Cat Power and Juliette Lewis (see story on pages 22-23) - it’s sad to think Love feels threatened by young women who no doubt grew up listening to and admiring Love’s music with her band Hole. Looks like you’ll have to fend for yourselves, ladies.![]()
