“I am ready to play for cash and prizes,’’ Melissa Etheridge says cheerfully when we ring her up for a spin through the iPod shuffle. The throat-scorching, Grammy-winning, soul-baring, cancer-beating singer-songwriter behind such hits as “Come to My Window’’ and “Bring Me Some Water’’ plays the South Shore Music Circus next Thursday. Etheridge’s shuffle reveals an eclectic palette featuring everything from classic-rock hero Springsteen to jazz-Hindustani-ambient musicmakers Tabla Beat Science. “I listen to stuff that moves me,’’ she says, “it doesn’t matter what category it’s in.’’

I like pop music. I remember my son said, ‘You’ve got Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl’’ on here. Ewww, Mom!’ And I said, ‘Wait a minute, son, let’s look at this whole thing.’ ’’ (Laughs).
