Melissa Etheridge, singer-songwriter

“I am ready to play for cash and prizes,’’ Melissa Etheridge says cheerfully when we ring her up for a spin through the iPod shuffle. The throat-scorching, Grammy-winning, soul-baring, cancer-beating singer-songwriter behind such hits as “Come to My Window’’ and “Bring Me Some Water’’ plays the South Shore Music Circus next Thursday. Etheridge’s shuffle reveals an eclectic palette featuring everything from classic-rock hero Springsteen to jazz-Hindustani-ambient musicmakers Tabla Beat Science. “I listen to stuff that moves me,’’ she says, “it doesn’t matter what category it’s in.’’

1. “Black Coffee,’’ Rosemary Clooney

2. “My Lucky Day,’’ Bruce Springsteen

3. “Bushfire,’’ the B-52s

4. “Wake Me When It’s Over,’’ Longwave

5. “Secret Channel,’’ Tabla Beat Science

6. “New Favorite,’’ Alison Krauss & Union Station

7. “Good Girls and Boys,’’ Melissa Etheridge (demo of a new song)

8. “A Christmas Song,’’ George Winston

9. “Feels Like Tonight,’’ Daughtry

10. “Every Night,’’ Paul & Linda McCartney

Total Songs: 5,101

Glad we missed: “When my kids are looking for stuff to play in the car they’ll say, ‘Mom, you’ve got a Britney Spears song on here!’ ’’ (Laughs). “I say, ‘Well, you’ve got to check out everything.’ I’ve got a couple of Beyoncé songs. I like pop music. I remember my son said, ‘You’ve got Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl’’ on here. Ewww, Mom!’ And I said, ‘Wait a minute, son, let’s look at this whole thing.’ ’’ (Laughs).
