Moby, the militantly vegan and devoutly Christian techno musician, is getting high praise for his new album, “Wait for Me,’’ but don’t bother congratulating him. “I try to base my sense of self on hanging with my friends and doing the laundry,’’ says Herman Melville’s great-great-grand-nephew (hence the nickname), who performs at House of Blues next Thursday. Here is an annotated list of Moby’s randomly generated Top Ten.

1. “Goodbye Horses,’’ Q Lazzarus. “I guarantee you know this song. It plays in ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ ’’

2. “A Whiter Shade of Pale,’’ Procol Harum. “My mom was a hippie.’’

3. “Murderous,’’ Nitzer Ebb. “Very influential to early electronic dance producers.’’

4. “Broken English,’’ Marianne Faithfull. “One of my all-time favorite songs.’’

5. “In My Time of Dying,’’ Led Zeppelin. “Somehow they make touring make sense.’’

6. “Only the Lonely,’’ Roy Orbison (Laughs)

7. “Death Valley ’69’’ Sonic Youth. “I need to buy some new records.’’

8. “Love TKO,’’ Teddy Pendergrass. “This proves I’m not skipping songs.’’

9. “Oh! Bondage Up Yours!,’’ X-Ray Spex. “A weird punk rock single.’’

10. “Partita No. 3,’’ J.S. Bach. “I studied classical music before I discovered punk rock.’’

Total songs: About 3,000 of other people’s songs, between 5,000 and 6,000 of his own unreleased songs.

Glad we missed: Modern rock circa 1997.
