It was Duke Ellington’s haunting “Mood Indigo’’ that inspired the instrumentation for Boston’s Randy Pingrey Trio, which is trombone by the band’s namesake, trumpet by Jerry Sabatini, and saxophone and clarinet by James Wylie. The threesome met while studying at the New England Conservatory and have played throughout the area. For tonight’s program, the trio will premiere original improvised jazz and experimental pieces written for this concert and venue. We’ve been told that they might even come up with names for the compositions at the concert. 7:30 p.m. Free (donations are welcome). St. John’s Episcopal Church, 7 Revere St., Jamaica Plain. www.jpconcerts.org
