Jozef Van Wissem makes 21st-century music with a 17th-century lute by blending contemporary folk and early music. Turntablist Jay Sullivan takes distressed vinyl, vintage record players, and electronic ephemera to create crackling sounds. This music is thanks to the Boston Center for the Arts fringe music series “Overheard/Underground.’’ Tonight’s inaugural performance kicks off the three-part series of boundary breaking and limit-defying talents working in a variety of musical styles. 7:30-10 p.m. $10. The Boston Center for the Arts Mills Gallery, 551 Tremont St., Boston. 617-426-5000. www.bcaonline.org
