Music gets Chuck Hogan in the mood - to write. The author of “Prince of Thieves,’’ the basis of the movie Ben Affleck is now filming in Boston, says he listens to his MP3 player to conjure a character, a place, a time. So what’s he whistling while he works?

1. “Jesus Walks,’’ Kanye West - “I listen to Slacker, which is an Internet radio thing. . . . This is something I heard there.’’

2. “On the Loose,’’ Saga - “It’s a lost ’80s tune but a good one. They’re a Canadian band, if I remember. It’s an early MTV thing.’’

3. “Scorpio’s View’’ Lalo Schifrin, from the “Dirty Harry’’ soundtrack - “It’s good for crime fiction.’’

4. “Jam on It,’’ Newcleus - “This is an 8-minute-long silly ’80s rap song, and I have every word memorized.’’

5. “I Gotta Feeling,’’ Black Eyed Peas - “My 7-year-old son came home from a play date and said he needed me to download this one.’’

6. “Graffiti Worth Reading,’’ Mighty Mighty Bosstones - “I know Dicky Barrett, the lead singer, and I was hanging out with him . . . in LA recently, and he played this for me. It’s on their new CD, “Pin Points & Gin Joints.’’

7. “Far From Over,’’ Frank Stallone - “When I hear this song, it makes me think about that ‘SNL’ synchronized swimming skit when Martin [Short] and Harry Shearer are trying to get men’s synchronized swimming into the Olympics.’’

8. “Leiningen vs. the Ants,’’ from “Escape’’ (radio show) - “Radio series like this are great for MP3 listening.’’

9. “Irresistible You,’’ Skip Nelson and the Sentimentalists with Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, from “Broadway Rhythm’’ - “I dig old movies. This one puts me right in that classic movie frame of mind.’’

10. “Spitfire,’’ the Prodigy - “This . . .puts me in the mind of vampires, which is perfect for those books with Guillermo [Del Toro].’’

Total songs: 257
