Opera has always been one of the hardest art forms to experience at the elite level, given the small number of first-tier opera houses and the prohibitive expense that goes into mounting productions. The Metropolitan Opera’s series of live high-definition simulcasts in movie theaters, which began in 2006, has opened a welcome channel of access to this rarefied cultural sphere.
