Backed by a drummer, keyboard player, and bassist, producer Ski Beatz used a tiny digital keypad to reprise many of the smooth and sturdy riffs in songs by everyone from Jay-Z (”Dead Presidents”) to all the artists on the new BluRoc label. Every single BluRoc artist also performed at the Brighton Music Hall on Tuesday night, in a three-hour show that made hip-hop’s lifetime seem far more compressed than rock’s equivalent historical span.
