As a hip-hop DJ/producer working in Los Angeles in 2009, the Michigan-born singer Mayer Hawthorne recorded a handful of soul songs steeped in the musical traditions of doo-wop and vintage R&B that were never intended for release. Those demos eventually got him signed to Stones Throw Records, who released the critically acclaimed ”A Strange Arrangement.” Yet despite having established a signature sound, Hawthorne is eager to show his range of influences stretches beyond Motown on his latest, ”How Do You Do?”
