Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd-- and the inspiration for songs like "Wish You Were Here"-- passed away at the age of 60 on Friday from complications of diabetes. The creative singer-songwriter-guitarist-- responsible for much of the group's earliest, most psychedelic material-- left Pink Floyd in 1968 due to struggles with his mental health. The surviving members of the Floyd issued a statement on David Gilmour's website as did avowed fan David Bowie who credited Barrett as an early inspiration.
