The night before the glitz and glamour of the Grammys in Los Angeles the Plug Independent Music Awards were handed out in New York City.

Voted on by djs, writers, webmasters, artists, managers, filmmakers, indie retailers and as the website says "most importantly fans," the Awards were handed out at Irving Plaza at a ceremony presided over by comic actor David Cross (the great, never-nude Tobias Funke to all you "Arrested Development" fans.)

The big winners-- and we do mean big since most categories had a whopping 12 nominees-- were Band of Horses who scored Album of the Year, Americana Album of the Year and Song of the Year for their haunting "The Funeral." Arctic Monkeys swung in to grab New Artist of the Year and Neko Case and Sufjan Stevens were the king and queen of the ball winning Female and Male Artist of the Year respectively.

Pavement principal Stephen Malkmus was awarded the Plug Impact Award for "for his contribution to independent music through his prolific career in Pavement, Silver Jews and his solo work." Amen to that.
