Ruthie Foster, "Woke Up This Mornin'"

The beauty of Ruthie Foster is that she's essentially a masterclass on American music. Never one for easy classification, the Texas-bred singer-songwriter has traversed the musical map, from the blues to folk to country to soul to gospel. There's usually some rock 'n' roll in there, too.

In this live performance of "Woke Up This Mornin'" from 2007, Foster talks about opening for Odetta, an obvious influence. While fans wait for a new album -- Foster hasn't released one since 2009's Grammy-nominated "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster" -- she's on the road again, including a stop tonight at Johnny D's.
