Amy Winehouse, 1983-2011
It's sad news that isn't shocking and yet still is. Amy Winehouse has died. The British soul singer was notorious for her struggles with drugs and alcohol over the years. So much so that they became the foundation of her myth as the ultimate bad girl, as celebrated in songs such as "Rehab" (about not going) and "You Know I'm No Good." Winehouse was found dead Saturday in her London home. Police have listed her death as "unexplained."
Winehouse would have been 28 in September.
In memoriam, Winehouse's breakthrough sophomore album, 2006's Grammy-winning "Back to Black," will be in heavy rotation around my house today. As will this heartbreaker, which perfectly captured Winehouse's way with passion and pathos:
