04moran 01.jpgThe Newport Jazz Festival announced its lineup this morning, and it includes a robust mix of all-stars and up-and-comers, from major jazz names like guitarist Pat Metheny and drummer Jack DeJohnette to hot young acts such as trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.

The festival takes place Aug. 4 and 5 at Fort Adams State Park, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Saturday's lineup features the Pat Metheny Unity Band; Dianne Reeves; Jack DeJohnette (leading two different bands); Bill Frisell playing John Lennon; the Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas Quintet; The Bad Plus with Bill Frisell; the James Carter Organ Trio; the Dafnis Prieto Sextet; 3 Clarinets featuring Ken Peplowski, Evan Christopher, and Anat Cohen; Christian McBride's Insight Straight, John Ellis & Double Wide; Darcy James Argue's Secret Society; and the Pedrito Martinez Group.

Sunday's lineup includes the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Jason Moran and Bandwagon, Kurt Elling; Miguel Zenon's Rayuela; Jenny Scheinman and Bill Frisell; the Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet; Rudresh Mahanthappa's Samdhi; Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke with Becca Stevens; John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet + 1 featuring Theo Bleckmann; the 3 Cohens; Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks; the Lewis Nash Quintet; Ryan Truesdell's Gill Evans Centennial Project; and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Septet. The biggest name on Sunday's bill is not a jazz ensemble but a blues group: The Tedeschi Trucks Band, the presumptive headliner, will no doubt close the festival Sunday evening.

Tickets are $74 in advance and $84 at the gate ($15 for children 3-15). A two-day pass is $135. Reserved seating is $90 per day, and premium seating tickets are $125 each. Tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. at www.newportjazzfest.net.

The lineup for the concert on Friday night, Aug. 3, at the International Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino will be announced later.
