Grammy Award winning rapper and hip-hop mogul Jay Z is celebrating his 44th birthday today. Considering his affinity for expensive and luxurious items – the artist also known as Hova purchased a 1982 Jean-Michel Basquiat painting for a hefty $4.5 million last month – Brooklyn-born Jay Z will likely celebrate his big day in style. If history is any indication, it seems he doesn’t mind going all out on gifts for his friends and family members either. And with so many powerful and affluent people surrounding him, he’s been on the receiving end of some pretty awesome gifts, too. Here are five examples of Jay Z balling out during birthday celebrations.
1. Hova’s $34,000 gift to Robinson Cano
Dabbling in the world of managing high-paid sports stars, Jay Z made a splash earlier this year by signing New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano to his Roc Nation Sports agency. As a sign of gratitude to his new client, Hova reportedly gave the baseball star a Shawn Carter Classic Fusion watch by Hublot – valued at $34,000 – during a party in Belgium for his 31st birthday this past October.
While the luxurious gift seemed like a nice gesture, the move may have violated rules set by the Major League Baseball Players Association, causing the organization to start an investigation into the matter.
2. Blue Ivy’s $200,000 birthday bash
As the child of two of the most successful stars in music today, one would expect Blue Ivy Carter to get the royal treatment for her big day. According to Huffington Post, Daddy Jay didn’t spare any expense for his little one’s first birthday party, reportedly spending more than $200,000 on the shindig. One of Blue Ivy’s luxurious gifts included a custom-made, diamond encrusted Barbie doll that cost $80,000. The cake alone cost more than $2000. One can only imagine how big her sweet sixteen will be.
3. Beyonce’s seaside birthday getaways
For the former Destiny’s Child frontwoman’s birthday this year, Hova took his wife and daughter Blue Ivy on a whirlwind yacht voyage through Spain and Italy. The trip included a plethora of top notch amenities, from a sauna and fully equipped bar to a Jacuzzi pool with a glass bottom located on the ship’s main deck. The seaside getaways seem to be a tradition for Beyonce’s big day each year, as the family traveled by yacht on the Mediterranean Sea near the south of France for her birthday last year.
4. Beyonce’s multimillion dollar presents
In 2012, Jay Z’s wife went all out for her hubby’s birthday by giving him a Hublot “Big Bang” timepiece, valued at a cool $5 million. The watch features more than 1,282 diamonds, including more than 100 carats of baguette diamonds, six emerald cut stones, as well as an enclosure comprised of 18K white gold. Prior to this expensive display of affection, Beyonce got her man a Bugatti Veyron for his birthday in 2010 that was worth $2 million. Money may not buy love, but it can buy some pretty luxurious gifts.
5. Jay gives grandmother a flashy 85th birthday celebration
According to the NY Post, the hip-hop impresario gave his grandmother Hattie a very special 85th birthday in 2010. Accompanied by his wife Beyonce, Jay reportedly picked her up in a Rolls-Royce and brought her to the Liberty Warehouse, which is known for its stunning view of the Statue of Liberty. Dancers from the Boys & Girls Club entertained the guests who were in attendance.
