Tonight, two Boston Bands share a dual record release bill at the Middle East Upstairs. And while two will enter, only one will leave. While Mean Gene Okerlund couldn't be reached for his ring-side commentary for what will surely be a steel cage match of rock and wits, Inbound Sounds is doing our best here to interview the contestants and see what kind of smack they have to talk.
In the red corner, you've got gentle indie country kids Muy Cansado who are releasing their latest full-length, Let It Go. In the blue corner, you've got fist-pumpers Naked On Roller Skates with their new Songs from a Wooden Box EP. I asked Muy Cansado's Chris Mulvey and Naked On Roller Skates' Travis Richter to face off and talk a little smack before tonight's show.
The word is that Naked On Roller Skates' Travis Richter gives Muy Cansado a bad name around town. It seems that Muy Cansado's brand of country-disco, which is working so well for Inbound Sounds, isn't cutting the mustard for this macho man.
Here comes Mister first-take guitar solos Travis Richter right now! Nice trunks! (you wish you could see this folks). "Naked on Roller Skates is gonna prove to everyone exactly why we're a force of destruction and why Muy Cansado doesn't deserve to tune our instruments, let alone attempt to release a second rate, hack job CD on the same night Naked On Roller Skates releases its critically acclaimed EP". He's spitting on me folks [wipes face]. This is excitement. "TONIGHT Chris Mulvey better have eyes in the back of his head cause he's got a target on his back. He's gonna find out first hand what it's like to get slapped in the mouth by a band of rock misfits who are just looking to serve up a beating. WOOOO!"
Can Naked On Roller Skates back that up? Hear for yourself with this Carly Simon-esque hurricane of a track, "Payphone."

But what's this? Mulvey's not going to take that kind of smack lying down. He's greasing up his hear into a deadly spike. You wouldn't want to get head-butted with that. While Inbound Sounds might appreciate the classic rock jams of Naked On Roller Skates,
Muy Cansado would rather listen to NPR than hear that noise. "It is not wise to wake a sleeping giant! Tonight come and witness the waking of Muy Cansado as we rise from our slumber to completely dismantle the tiny little elves of Naked On Roller Skates! As we unleash our new full length album, Let It Go, we will not be letting ANY of those wee little folk go." What's that folks? I think Mulvey wants to steal their songs?!? He's ripping the mic out of my hand! "They will suffer our wrath and in the end they will happily relinquish all rights to Songs From A Wooden Box! We look forward to adding to our song cannon and ridding the world of Naked On Roller Skates once and for all. WE ARE REAL AMERICANS!"
What's Muy Cansado's soundtrack to this breed of braggadocio? Check out "Predisposed."
