If the opening chords of "Sick of the Blues" - the first cut on the official debut by this group from Asheville, N.C. - don't get your toes tapping, then you probably don't have a pulse. The funky rock and blues band the Royal We has kicked around the Southeast since 2001 and is just starting to reach beyond its regional roots. The group's barroom energy, tight guitar, and rhythms are enhanced by clever, sardonic lyrics, written mostly by band founder, frontman, and singer Chris Tanfield. The band also makes fine use of an electronic instrument usually used to announce the arrival of aliens in sci-fi movies: the theremin. Tanfield, a "thereminist," uses its eerie whine to add musical spice to the reggae-like "Dance Together," the poppy "Unfinished Business," and other songs. Like a more rural and rocking Fountains of Wayne, the Royal We gives catchy melodies a knowing edge. [Stephanie Schorow]
