Nik Freitas

Sun Down (Team Love)

ESSENTIAL "Sun Down"

Originally from the small farm town of Visalia, Calif., sad-faced singer-songwriter Nik Freitas took a break from his job to record "Sun Down" at Poppy Peak, a Craigslist-stocked studio shed behind his house. Freitas is a former staff photographer for the skateboarding magazine Thrasher. He released two albums with Future Farmer and another on his own before being signed to Team Love, Conor Oberst's label. On "Sun Down" he affects a new, Jim Croce soft-rock radio sound but keeps some of his former alchemist in the garage type of soul. The title track, all snare drum and jaunty melody, could be a Paul Simon song. The horns come out on "Sophie," and it sounds like Otis Redding might take over for the little guy. Freitas finds himself on the piano ballad "See Me There" - kind of sentimental, but honest and so good. [Jonathan Levitt]

Nik Freitas plays with Maria Taylor and Johnathan Rice at the Paradise Rock Club Monday. Tickets are $14, $12 advance at livenation.com.
