Fallin' Off the Reel, Vol. 2 (Truth & Soul)
ESSENTIAL "Love Comes and Goes"
The soul revivalists at Daptone Records have been getting a lot of ink lately, but their cousins over at Truth & Soul deserve their own share of props for the work they've been doing. This second "Fallin' Off the Reel" compilation continues the work of the first volume by collecting everything the label has put out on vinyl 45 since 2006. On the reissues side, Sammy Campbell (a.k.a. Tyrone Ashley) does a spooky approximation of Screamin' Jay Hawkins with "Just a Little While Longer." Teen girl group Black Velvet hit a fantastic, can't-help-but-sing-along funk groove on "An Earthquake's Coming," and Timothy McNealy does well by Al Green with a version of his "I'm So Glad You're Mine." For the new, it's hard to choose between any of the four uniformly excellent pieces of Latin soul from Bronx River Parkway and El Michel Affair's jazzy, druggy, dubby "This One's for My Baby." Lee Fields pairs his anguished vocals with a Philly-soul sound on "My World" and "Love Comes and Goes" and blows away everything else here, old or new. [Stuart Munro]![]()
