Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

Pershing (Polyvinyl)

ESSENTIAL "Boring Fountain"

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has a sound that is as nostalgic as its name. The Missouri-based quartet specializes in winsome, lo-fi indie rock that recalls the Kinks. SSLYBY's wistful harmonies and jangly guitar hooks have led critics to anoint them the next heir to the Shins. The band's self-released 2005 debut, "Broom," was an online and underground hit, garnering enough buzz to be rereleased by Polyvinyl in 2006. Its follow-up, "Pershing," is equally winning and even more polished, featuring one charismatic, hook-laden song after another. From the horn-heavy sashay of "Boring Fountain," through understated soft-rock ballad "Modern Mystery," with its boy-next-door vocals and cascading guitars, the mood is sweet and sincere. The band lives up to the promise of its early acclaim and shows it's more than just the sum of its influences. [Sarah Tomlinson]
