Yo Majesty

Futuristically Speaking ... Never Be Afraid (Domino)

ESSENTIAL "Never Be Afraid"

This Tampa duo has been an underground semi-sensation for its supposedly groundbreaking frank lyrics and female defiance. Made up of Shunda K and Jewel 8, whom we'll kindly call MCs, the group proves that women can make party hip-hop as bone-headed and dull as the biggest horn-dog, brain-dead male rappers. The only earthshaking thing about the group's sound and concept is some of the big boom beats provided by producer David Alexander. A lot of these songs will have people bouncing off club walls with the rhythmic shifts and frenzied beats that merge electro with crunk and house. But this adds up to nothing more than party music with a bit of attitude and sex-obsessed defiance. [Ken Capobianco]
