Mike Posner, ‘31 Minutes to Takeoff’

Posner has already taken off thanks to the smash single “Cooler Than Me,’’ and on his debut he appears to be trying to create his own musical genre: hit-oriented emo/electro-pop. This short, lightweight disc finds Posner evolving from his hip-hop leaning early mixtapes into a nasal-voiced talk-singer with some serious woman issues. Mostly, though (unlike, say, Kid Cudi), his lyrics barely scratch the surface of real emotions. While the hit is a snarky revenge track, he turns to adolescent nastiness on “Cheated’’ (“I should have cheated on you/ I was everything you wanted and more/ nobody told me I was dating a whore’’). The cheater is named — an unfortunate postmodern path to celebrity. A couple of tracks are produced by Cisco Adler, who works with Shwayze, and “Gone in September’’ descends into that MC’s brand of inanity. Posner was involved in writing and producing the bulk of these keyboard-based songs. “Do U Wanna?’’ is infectious and samples Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing,’’ but the R&B flavors overwhelm the slight vocals. The best cuts are the spacey closers, including “Delta 1406,’’ which confronts post-success disillusionment. Finally, his glib pop reveals some depth. (Out tomorrow)
