If you asked her, Needham native Marissa Nadler would likely blanch at the “freak folk’’ camp to which she was relegated upon releasing her ’04 debut, “Ballads of Living and Dying,’’ the first strand in a string of dark pearls that continues with her self-titled fifth album. Fan-funded by a Kickstarter campaign and self-released, Nadler’s latest collection chronicling the quests of little kings, alabaster queens, and even a conjoined twin or two makes for a striking follow-up to ’09’s soft stunner, “Little Hells.’’ The singer-guitarist’s mien is again that of a siren dressed in black mourning and white lace, beckoning lovers and loners through the misty moors. This time, however, there’s less gauze and more clarity cutting through the haze of tracks like “In a Magazine’’ and “The Sun Always Reminds Me of You,’’ the latter of which suggests Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval covering Kris Kristofferson. “Baby I Will Leave You in the Morning’’ is an alluring alchemy of psych-folk and Neko Case-ian country, but with a disquieting synth line creeping into the mix. Throughout, Nadler’s joined by Tulsa’s Carter Tanton, who knows a thing or two about conjuring exquisite, echo-laden atmosphere. This is the sound of the singer at full solo stride, suffusing her music with - as she puts it on “Daisy, Where Did You Go?’’ - “phantom limbs and eerie hymns.’’ (Out now)
