How about a song with multiple, changing inspirations? Elton John originally wrote and dedicated "Candle in the Wind" to Marilyn Monroe in 1973 (her birth name is Norma Jean, like the name in the first line of the song), before rededicating it to an AIDS victim in 1990. Finally, Sir Elton gave it one final refurbishing and released it in honor of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. The good news is that lyrically it works each way: "And I would have liked to have known you /
But I was just a kid /
Your candle burned out long before /
Your legend ever did."
