Jeremy Eichler's top CD picks of 2007

Piano Quintet, First Concerto Op. 35, Concertino (Shostakovich), Martha Argerich, piano; EMI. Argerich is hard to count on these days, but when she shows up and is in top form, she's still a force of nature. This all-Shostakovich disc was recorded live at her Lugano festival. It features the First Concerto and the Concertino for two pianos, but the electrifying reading of the Piano Quintet, with violinist Renaud Capucon and cellist Mischa Maisky, is worth the price of the disc alone.
