Rise and Shine?
Sure the music industry is in a funk. But a new year brings new hopes. Will the Jacksons reign? Will Winehouse storm the Grammys? The Globe's pop music critics Joan Anderman, Sarah Rodman, and James Reed forecast the year ahead.
Eight to watch in '08
From Beach House's gauzy dream pop to Leona Lewis's cool British soul, the new faces of 2008 are all over the map. Read about the artists, check out their official websites, and watch their music videos right here.

Nicole Atkins
Her new album, "Neptune City," is a deep, effervescent collection of noir Americana. Check out Atkins Feb. 15 at T.T. the Bear's.

Beach House
Woozy, off-kilter nuggets filled Beach House's self-titled EP. Beach House plays upstairs at the Middle East Upstairs March 31.

Leona Lewis
In November, her "Spirit" became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history; it arrives on these shores in March.

Yo Majesty
What's the antidote to a quarter-century of sexist, homophobic rap? How about a hard-core lesbian hip-hop duo?

Lady Antebellum
Before this male-female group's disc drops in April, the trio will hit the road as an opening act for Martina McBride.

Thao Nguyen
This 23-year-old singer-songwriter put out her debut in 2005, but her new one could (and should) be the big breakthrough.

Lisandro AristimuÑo
This 29-year-old singer-songwriter from Patagonia is definitely one to watch and root for. Let the online ascent begin.

Liam Finn
This one-man band's debut, "I'll Be Lightning," strikes Jan. 22, and Finn plays the Middle East Upstairs March 22.
Winehouse at the Grammys?
|
Joan Anderman: She'll show, pumped full of meds in the hope of avoiding calamity, and sleepwalk through the ceremonies - more beehived zombie than freshly minted pop star. (Nominated for six awards, Winehouse will walk away with two: best new artist and best pop vocal female.)
Sarah Rodman: She won't show up but will still win at least two awards including best new artist and best pop vocal female. Perhaps Kanye West will accept on her behalf. |
