Live in the Lab: Gold Fields and Sue Costello CANCELLED

Posted by Adam 12 January 31, 2013 01:35 PM

We had a bevy of bands perform for you in the Globe Media Lab last month. Click here for performances from Kingsley Flood, San Cisco, Churchill, and The Joy Formidable. Hell, we even had best-selling author Brad Meltzer in for a Q&A. And it was tremendous.

And we were all set to bring you some funny from Sue Costello...

...and a live set from Gold Fields...

...but then the damn storm came along. So we had to cancel the whole damn thing.

Don't worry, though. We'll have plenty more Live in the Lab goodies for you real soon. Just stay tuned.

Adam 12 can't stand the Super Bowl; will be live-blogging the Super Bowl

Posted by Adam 12 January 31, 2013 11:19 AM

Hey, it's Adam 12. Allow me to don my Andy Rooney pants for a moment here and admit to something:

I can't stand the Super Bowl.

First of all, I'm not a football fan. Not that it matters, because the Super Bowl isn't about football. The Super Bowl is about the spectacle surrounding the championship football game at the center of it all.

And what does that spectacle consist of? Well, for starters, a Halftime Show that's been hit-or-miss since U2 performed over a decade ago. Of course, we're looking to fix that this year.

And let's not forget the commercials, aka the REAL reason most folks watch the Super Bowl. It's 2013, people. We have technology that makes it possible to never, ever watch commercials. Yet we're volunteering to do just that.

Look, I get it. Super Bowl spots can achieve a level of high art. And their entertainment value sometimes eclipses what's happening on the field. And I understand completely that, as a 15-year broadcasting vet and COMMERCIAL Production Director who basically makes his living off of advertising dollars, I am an ENORMOUS hypocrite. But I just can't shake the feeling that the spectacle of the Super Bowl has grown too grotesque proportions.

So, naturally, when Boston.com's Chris Rattey asked me to take part in this Sunday's Brand Bowl and live-blog my thoughts, I jumped at the chance (read: I was dragged kicking and screaming into the fold).

I'll be on my best behavior on Sunday night, I promise (promises were meant to be broken, as the saying goes). Follow my live-blog here, and make sure you follow RadioBDC on Twitter, too. And GO PATRIOTS! Oh, wait. That's right, they lost to the Ravens. And haven't won a Super Bowl in almost a decade, despite getting there twice. But hey, "In Bill We Trust," right?

Breaking news update: Police arrest two individuals for arson

Posted by Alex Pearlman January 31, 2013 11:05 AM

A blaze broke out in West Bridgewater at around 9:30 last night on South Main St., in a commercial building that was under construction. Police have arrested two individuals, a man and a woman, and have charged them with setting fire to a building.

Boston Globe deputy city editor Mike Bello stopped in to update listeners on the situation, and that clip can be heard below.

Bello said that according to investigators, the individuals are only being charged in connection to last night's West Bridgewater fire, although they are under investigation for a spate of arson attacks over the past three months, including one that was set at the Raynham dog track in December.

Police note that the suspects allegedly follow a pattern that includes setting fires at night in abandoned or under-construction buildings.

The couple was arraigned in Brockton District Court this morning, and are believed to be from Middleborough. No one has been injured in the fires.

Kevin Paul Dupont on "Doug" Hamilton

Posted by Adam 12 January 30, 2013 01:49 PM

Last week he was "Dougie." In this week's column, Kevin Paul Dupont refers to the young Bruins star as "Doug." He also continues to break down this young season, the early fan response, and his distaste for the shootout.

Kingsley Flood is Live in the Lab tonight

Posted by Alex Pearlman January 30, 2013 10:59 AM

battles_albumcover.jpegTheir sophomore album "Battles" comes out Feb. 5, but Kingsley Flood are keeping themselves busy until then, hitting up venues up and down the East coast this month, from New Hampshire to Washington, DC. The Boston-based band is back home tonight and will be stopping by to play an acoustic set with RadioBDC.

Coming off a win at the 2012 Boston Music Awards where they were named Americana Act of the Year, Kingsley Flood has been pulling in listeners all over. The six-piece band is a little bit punk, a tinge folksy, and slightly somber at times, but the sound, which Boston.com's Joel Brown called "not-especially-categorizable," is serious rock, no matter how you spin it.

The band has been featured on MTV's Buzzworthy blog and in American Songwriter magazine in just the past week, and we're all dying to hear more tracks off the new album.

For now, make due with the ones linked below, and make sure to come out to tonight to see these rockers jam out in the Lab.

Two-fer Tuesday?

Posted by Adam 12 January 29, 2013 03:58 PM

Henry Santoro and Julie Kramer were shuckin' and jivin' this Tuesday morning, with a parade of guests passing through the RadioBDC studio. We're shining the spotlight on two guests right here, the first of which is the Boston Globe's own Geoff Edgers, who has a new show on the Travel Channel called "Edge of America."

We always love when our good friend Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone stops by for a visit, and he did this morning, with Dave Jick of Dave's Fresh Pasta in tow. Nothing wrong with a fresh antipasto on a late Tuesday morning.

Oh, and a big thanks to Joe Andruzzi for coming in, too! I guess that makes it a Three-fer, huh?

Who should play what for the RadioBDC halftime show?

Posted by Chris Rattey January 29, 2013 09:56 AM

nipplegate__1359406302_4416.jpegThere's nothing worse than a lame Super Bowl halftime show. And let's face it, there have been plenty through the years. And we are on the cusp of sheer disaster with a Destiny's Child reunion already riddled with lip-syncing drama and Twitter rumors that the reconciliation is not true. Let's be frank ... yawn.

But what if you could plan the halftime show, exactly the way you wanted it to be, without the divas and the wardrobe malfunctions? We're giving you a shot to save the day.

Head to our submission form and let us know who you'd pick to play the Super Bowl.

Mean Creek plays our +1 Series at the Black Rose

Posted by Chris Rattey January 25, 2013 02:19 PM

Boston locals Mean Creek joined opener Glenn Yoder & The Western States at the Black Rose last night for a free installment of the RadioBDC +1 Series, playing for a packed house of those brave enough to venture out in frigid weather.

The indie rock quartet blasted the club with songs off their latest album, Youth Companion, which dropped in October, and had over 200 people dancing along to their folk-tinged rock.

RadioBDC hosted the event, with beer provided by our sponsor, Sapporo, and a good time was had by all.

Here are some pictures from the event, and there are more on our Facebook page.

Sapporo Presents the RadioBDC +1 Series with Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Posted by Adam 12 January 24, 2013 05:14 PM

If you recall, we were expecting Mr. Leftwich to grace us with his presence last fall. Sadly, a family emergency delayed his hopping-across-the-pond. But he's state-side this February, and we're pleased as punch to welcome him to headline our next RadioBDC +1 Series, Friday February 22nd at Naga in Cambridge.

The talented young songwriter released his first ep at the tender age of 21, and his first full-length album--'Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm'--a year later. You've heard us play "Atlas Hands:'

He's a whiz with the covers, too. Download his latest ep for takes on M83's "Midnight City" & more. And be sure to click here to RSVP for his RadioBDC +1 Series show on 2/22, presented by Sapporo.

Kevin Paul Dupont on Dougie Hamilton

Posted by Adam 12 January 23, 2013 03:11 PM

Adam 12 tries (and fails miserably) to get Kevin on board with his nickname for the Bruins' rookie defenseman: "Dougie Fresh." Granted, Dougie Hamilton wasn't even close to born when Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew dropped "The Show," but still...

The two also talked about Z's take on Dougie, the chemistry of this Bruins team, and judging these teams and their chances on a measly two games. Listen:

And let's throw this in here for good measure, whaddaya say?

Live in the Lab with Brad Meltzer

Posted by Chris Rattey January 22, 2013 02:35 PM

meltzer.jpegBest-selling author Brad Meltzer was Live in the Lab this afternoon, talking about research for his newest book, “The Fifth Assassin,” the second in his Inner Circle series, which follows hero Beecher White as he tracks down the truth about the men who assassinate presidents.

Meltzer touched on some of the most interesting (and a little creepy) sides of his research for the new book, including a run-in with the skeleton of our 20th president, James Garfield, and the brain of the man who assassinated him, Charles Guiteau, at the National Museum of Health and Medicine.

As a comic book writer, Meltzer has written issues of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the Justice League and DC comics’ Green Arrow, all of which he writes wearing his “underwear on the outside,” or so he told us.

For more anecdotes on Meltzer’s new book and to hear his Q and A with the audience, check out the video and the audio.

It is time to save the planet

Posted by Julie Kramer January 10, 2013 10:07 AM

The year 2012 was the hottest year on record
Record heat waves in Australia with temps at 122 degrees F
The Mississippi shrinking
Polar Ice caps melting
The heartland experiencing horrific drought
What Can You Do?

1. Conserve Water: here are a few tips to save water:

When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.

If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model. And Take a 5 minute shower not 20 minutes.

Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.

Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying.

Will 2013 be as funny as 2012 was?

Posted by Adam 12 January 8, 2013 02:51 PM

According to Adam 12--our own "Mr.-Sunny-Side-of-Life"--2012 was a pretty funny year, despite the horrific acts of mass violence and an election season that painted our country as overwhelmingly divided and negative. Why focus on the bad stuff, though, when there was so much knee-slapping goodness?

Remember "Lettermon," the late-nite host re-imagined as a blunt-toking, head-bobbing rastafarian? Click that link & get irie!

lettermon.jpg

M83's "Midnight City" was omnipresent in 2012. And this fake clip of Bill Clinton ripping the sax solo on the Arsenio Hall Show still gives 12 the giggles.

Oh, and Paul Driscoll was eaten by a dinosaur last year. How is that not funny?

driscollsaurus.jpeg

2012 also brought us 'The Eric Andre Show.' Not familiar? It's a bizarre talk show with public-access production quality that opens each episode with the host trashing his set.

Oh, and most of his guests are fake.

See? 2012 had some chuckles. 2013 had better start bringing the funny. Maybe that old lady can find another classic piece of artwork to "restore?"

Almost Time To Break Out the Flannel?

Posted by Julie Kramer January 4, 2013 09:50 AM

Eddie Vedder says Pearl Jam is about half way done with the new album. Taking their sweet time, Eddie tells fans to just...chill out. And take a deeeeep breath.

The follow-up to 2009's Backspacer, the latest effort does not have an album title and the band has not revealed any song titles or a release date.

Pearl Jam did release their annual Christmas fan club single for the Ten Club members.

So when do you wash up the old 90's flannel? Maybe in a month or two?
