NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL last played Boston on July 24, 1998. The group played its final show, in its hometown of Athens, about six months later. Now you can start the countdown: today the band's web site announced that there are five reunion shows planned this year, featuring the lineup that accompanied Jeff Mangum during the tours for the group's two best releases, On Avery Island and In the Aeroplane . . . Over the Sea.

The past couple years have seen Mangum touring solo, playing stripped down -- but utterly fantastic -- versions of the NMH catalogue. And seriously, those shows -- including two in Boston in September 2011 -- have been great.

But in their heyday, NMH were a chaotic and raucous punk-rock circus band. And the idea that they could be coming back is pretty much the best thing ever.
