State police cruisers blared their sirens this morning, as Whitey Bulger arrived in federal court at 7:30 am. Members of victims' families arrived soon after, and lined up outside the courthouse.

J.W. Carney, Bulger's lawyer, said he will defend his client to the fullest, and paint a picture of what the underworld was like in the '70s and '80s, reported Mike Bello this morning.

Shelley Murphy and Milton Valencia are liveblogging the trial for Boston.com, and opening statements got underway at 9 a.m.

Listen to Bello's morning analysis and his conversation with Henry Santoro and Julie Kramer, including which members of the Bulger family are present for the trial, who is sitting in which designated section, and what kind of social media will be allowed.
