Authorities announced this morning that Stephen Rakes, a man who had been expected to testify against Whitey Bulger, was found dead in Lincoln yesterday afternoon.

According to Mike Bello, who spoke about the news on RadioBDC, Rakes was one of Bulger's most determined alleged victims, and had waited decades to testify against the South Boston crime boss, but wasn't called. He was told this week that prosecutors did not plan to call him to testify.

Bulger and his partner Stephen Flemmi allegedly extorted Rakes for his South Boston liquor store at gun point in 1984.

Rakes' cause of death will be announced by the state medical examiner’s office, but there are no obvious signs of trauma to the body.

Listen to Mike Bello discuss Rakes and other developments in the Bulger trial.
