Music Video Roundup

Posted by Steph Mangan August 28, 2013 05:16 PM
While the rest of internet is still obsessing over the hot mess that was the VMAs, lets distract ourselves with videos that actually matter.

First up on this week’s Music Video Roundup is Two Door Cinema Club. There is no shortage of drama in the black and white video for ‘Changing Of The Seasons’. It's complete chaos with the hotel brawl, press conference scuffle, and an attack by a mob of adoring fangirls. The band will be in town for a pair of sold-out dates in October in support of their forthcoming EP, Changing Of The Seasons.

I know Adam 12 is super excited for the new video from The National. Did you know they are his favorite band of all time? *
In the new video for ‘Graceless’, the guys basically get drunk and partake in frat-boy adventures.
*I’m lying. Not sorry.

Last, but certainly not least is Caspian. Sadly, the death of their bassist Chris Friedrich was announced via their facebook page this morning. Our thoughts are with Chris’ family, friends, and bandmates.

VIDEO: Henry in the Grub with Chef Nick Gurski from Bond

Posted by Chris Rattey August 28, 2013 02:26 PM

Nick Gurski, the head chef at Bond - a restaurant located at The Langham Hotel in Boston - joined Henry Santoro in studio to talk about their great sandwiches and new lunch menu. And yes, that includes the ridiculous lobster roll you see below in the screenshot. Press play for the tasty interview.

Miley twerking on stuff? Bah. We have Steph Mangan floating on stuff

Posted by Adam 12 August 27, 2013 03:29 PM

So your feed is still full of folks "reacting" to the Miley Cyrus VMA debacle. And you've likely allowed your curiosity to get the best of you and clicked through a Miley-inspired gallery, like Buzzfeed's "Miley Cyrus Twerks On Famous Paintings" or the "Miley Twerking On Things We Should Talk About" Tumblr.

Enough already.

We submit to you an alternative: LocalBDC & Grrl Power host Steph Mangan "floating." You see, Steph had this pithy pic snapped on the boat to our Thompson Island party over the weekend.

smang.jpg

Cute, right? Well, Adam 12 took one look and immediately enlisted Brittany in our office to get cracking on the Photoshop. The results were pretty hilarious. Of course, we had to put Steph on stage with Miley...

The Replacements reunite at Riotfest

Posted by Adam 12 August 26, 2013 03:49 PM

While the world was staring slack-jawed at the twerking, auto-tuned embarrassment that was the MTV Video Music Awards, we here at RadioBDC were watching our Twitter feed for updates from those lucky enough to be in Toronto to bear witness to The Replacements' reunion set at Riotfest.

One of those lucky ducks was Brad Searles of Bradley's Almanac, the long-running Boston-based music blog. Adam 12 got a hold of him for a first-hand account.

Here's the link to the live recording Brad mentioned, and here's the setlist pic he snapped:

We love it! We love when the Sox take two out of three out in Chavez Ravine. We love that the Dodgers took millions of dollars of Red Sox payroll and three players the team had no use for. And we love talking Red Sox every Monday with Chad Finn and Steve Silva.

We'll be off for the Labor Day holiday, but make a habit of streaming RadioBDC every Monday at 2 all through September as the Red Sox make their playoff push.

Music Video Roundup

Posted by Steph Mangan August 22, 2013 04:24 PM
Another week, another edition of Music Video Roundup. This week features Superchunk, Pity Sex, Bear Language, and STRFKR.

Superchunk is back with their 10th album I Hate Music, and a new video for the single “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo”. If Adam 12 wasn’t on vacation this week, he would probably be fangirling up a storm in the RadioBDC studio.

I have made no secret of my love for Pity Sex as their debut album, Feast of Love is one of my favorite releases this year and can be regularly heard on Grrl Power. Just this morning they released the video for their first single “Wind Up”.

Despite being a pretty upbeat and danceable song, STRFKR’s new video for “While I’m Alive” has a slightly morbid twist. Yet watching an elderly man dance his sadness away, makes a grim situation seem rather humorous.

Local boys Bear Language have a new video for “Meet Me Outside” and it is one hell of a dark and manic nightmare.

Get ready: The Allston DIY Fest Mixtape

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 22, 2013 01:47 PM

The fourth annual Allston DIY Fest will take over Ringer Park in Allston on Saturday. In anticipation of the weekend's events, organizers released a mixtape of music from the neighborhood as a quick glance into what attendees can expect to hear.

DIY Fest is billed as "an amazing blend of musicians, activists, artists, artisans, friends, and neighbors." It's a family-friendly neighborhood event organized by some hard-working local folks promoting the local Boston music community.

Preview some of these tracks if you're into local music and/or need something to rage to as the week wraps up.

Forum reopens

Posted by Adam 12 August 16, 2013 12:49 PM

It's Adam 12. Earlier this week, I was invited by the Joe Andruzzi Foundation to the grand re-opening of Forum on Boylston St. You'll remember that RadioBDC had teamed up with the Foundation for a live broadcast from Forum on Marathon Monday earlier this year. So of course, I jumped at the chance to show my support to the folks at Forum, who have gone through so much in the last four months.

As you can see in this video, the grand-reopening was a roaring success. It was great to see familiar faces from both Forum and the Foundation coming together to celebrate yet another triumph in the wake of one of Boston's darkest days.

I took a few pictures.

RadioBDC Sports: Brady goes down, panic ensues

Posted by Adam 12 August 15, 2013 02:21 PM

Boston.com's Zuri Berry called in from Gillette Stadium with the latest on Tom Brady (he's wearing a brace, taking snaps, and seems to be OK), Tim Tebow (he's probably making the team, so get used to it), and updated power rankings. Listen:

Adam 12 still maintains that this is the best footage of the Brady injury.

Adam 12 rides the rails again

Posted by Adam 12 August 15, 2013 01:36 PM

Adam 12 here, running through the summer of 2013 like a madman. It's truly been a blur, with vacations to Wells Beach and Disney World and day trips here, there, and everywhere.

But as much fun as this summer has been with my young family, I keep coming back to last May, when my son and I rode the Amtrak Downeaster for National Train Day. It was one of those perfect days that comes along maybe once a year, if you're lucky.

Since then, I've been keeping my ear to the tracks, so to speak, and just found out that
there's a three-day Downeaster Rail Sale from August 20-22. You can take the train to Freeport, ME (The L.L. Bean mothership, baby!) from any Downeaster station for $10 one-way. Up to two children ages 2 to 15 can ride for $5 one-way when accompanied by a $10 adult fare. Click here for reservations and details.

To put it plainly, traveling by train rules. And so does summertime in Maine. So get out there & make some summer memories on the cheap. And don't forget to take pictures!

Mike Bello on Edwin Alemany

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 15, 2013 11:57 AM

Alleged kidnapper and murderer Edwin Alemany was arraigned in West Roxbury after trying to kill himself yesterday by attempting to rip an artery out of his throat, said Mike Bello.

During these proceedings, it was revealed that Amy Lord was beaten, strangled and stabbed and her body was found in the Stony Brook Reservation in Hyde Park. She was kidnapped near her home in South Boston.

According to prosecutors, Alemany went to a convenience store and claimed he had "won the lottery," after he dumped Lord's body.

There is no evidence that Lord attempted to escape. Alemany is being held on $3 million bail.

Listen to the rest of Bello's analysis on this case on RadioBDC, and the possibility of an insanity defense:

The Nines Festival

Posted by Steph Mangan August 14, 2013 06:01 PM
The inaugural Nines Festival had a bit of something for everybody. The music selection was diverse, the grounds were decorated with local art instillations, and the comedy tent left everyone in stitches. And most importantly, everyone who took the trip to Devens was there to have a good time. Every single act brought an amazing energy and vibe to the occasion and the RadioBDC team and I certainly enjoyed ourselves.

I arrived in Devens just in time to see local pals, Air Traffic Controller kick off the festival on the Lucky Cat Stage. We were excited to hear ATC would be representing Boston after winning their spot in the lineup, and they truly did Boston proud. One of the biggest draws of The Nines Festival had to be Delta Spirit who brought a spirited, yet down-to-earth tone to the day. After being able to sit and talk with them before their set, I can confirm they are seriously the coolest dudes. But the highlight of Saturday’s festivities was undoubtedly K. Flay’s clever and high-energy performance. She owned the Lucky Cat stage with her raw, electric beats and brutally honest lyrics. Honestly, I was hooked after watching her own the stage and meeting and interviewing her solidified my obsession.

You can listen to all the interviews from Saturday below.

R. Kelly Is Trying To Be Cool

Posted by Steph Mangan August 14, 2013 04:26 PM

Coachella and the internet were buzzing after R. Kelly took the stage during Phoenix's set in Indio this past April. Now they have teamed up again, this time the product is an incredible remix version of their single "Trying To Be Cool", with Kelly adding backing vocals and crafting his own verse.

It is possible I may enjoy this unlikely collaborative success more than the original. I also now find myself not-so-secretly hoping for a Phoenix and R. Kelly tour in the future.

We were lucky enough to have Phoenix stop by the RadioBDC Coachella house for a quick chat and which you can watch HERE.

Music Video Roundup

Posted by Steph Mangan August 14, 2013 03:55 PM
After posting the first Music Video Roundup last week, I've decided to make it a regular thing here on the RadioBDC blog. This week's roundup features new videos from Haim, Sombear, Arctic Monkeys, and Potty Mouth.

The ladies of Haim prove their heartbreaker status in their new video for “The Wire”. The new video features Jorma Taccone, a flood of tears, and cheesy green screen backgrounds.

Sombear just released a self-directed video for “Incredibly Still”. He will be playing Great Scott on September 17th in support of his debut album, “Love You In The Dark”.

"Why’d You Only Call Me While You’re High" follows Arctic Monkey’s frontman, Alex Turner as he stumbles through the streets and experiences surreal hallucinations after a night of drinking.

The grrls of Potty Mouth are a favorite of both Grrl Power and LocalBDC. “The Spins” is the first single and video for their forthcoming LP “Hell Bent”, out September 17th. Rumor has it, all the cool kids will be at Great Scott on Sunday see their show with Bent Shapes and Krill.

Bello on Bulger: The trial is over

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 13, 2013 12:26 PM

James "Whitey" Bulger was convicted yesterday of drug trafficking, 11 murders, and a variety of other crimes. His sentencing will be Nov. 13, and he's expected to get life in prison, said Mike Bello this morning on RadioBDC.

Listen to Bello discuss the possibility of Bulger appealing his verdict, as well as questions about more trials for crimes allegedly committed in Florida and Ohio.

RadioBDC: Year One

Posted by Adam 12 August 12, 2013 04:48 PM

On August 13, 2012, at 12:00 p.m. EST, RadioBDC began streaming at Boston.com. You helped choose our very first song: it was "I Want My City Back" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Dicky called in, we had champagne. It was quite the moment. Here, take a look.

It's been quite the year since then, from free shows featuring Frank Turner, Royal Teeth, Black Light Dinner Party to Dropkick Murphys Live In The Lab, from hitting the slopes with the Drafters to heading out to the California desert for Coachella. We've done so much, and you've followed along. You've listened to us, you've come to our parties, you've supported us. And because of you, we get to celebrate a year online. Thank you.

RadioBDC Sports: Red Sox rotation and the road ahead

Posted by Adam 12 August 12, 2013 03:23 PM

While you were combing Twitter for news on the Bulger verdict, Adam 12, Chad Finn and Steve Silva were predicting the pitching rotation when (and if) Clay Buchholz returns and taking a look at the rest of the season schedule, among other things.

Seriously, though, that A-Rod gif is soooo uncomfortable. And funny.

RadioBDC Sports: Patriots power rankings and preseason preview

Posted by Adam 12 August 8, 2013 02:27 PM

'Tis the season, right? Adam 12 still can't wrap his mind around talking football in early August, but here we are on the eve of the Patriots' first preseason game. Lucky for 12, Boston.com's Zuri Berry just updated his Patriots' player power rankings and was more than happy to stop by and break them down, and to set the table for Pats preseason week one, which sees them face the other NFL team with an off-season PR nightmare, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Zuri claims the Patriots have a plan for Tebow. Maybe next Thursday at 2 we'll find out more about what that plan is.

Music Video Roundup

Posted by Steph Mangan August 6, 2013 04:10 PM
While the internet is still swooning over the new star-packed video from Mumford and Sons, I thought it would be a good time to highlight other videos that were released this past week.

"Hearts Like Ours" is the first single from The Naked and Famous’ forthcoming sophomore album, “In Rolling Waves”. While I am still not entirely clear on the storyline, I find it undeniably intriguing.

I predict that Classroom Battles will soon become the band to watch. The French/Irish group have just released the first single and video from their debut EP, “This Week’s Question". I can’t wait to hear their full EP when it is released in September and am looking forward to seeing them when they tour North America this fall.

CHVRCHES has been a favorite to play on Grrl Power since “Recover EP” was released in March. Yesterday they debuted the second video single from their forthcoming debut album, “The Bones of What You Believe”.

“Your Life Is A Lie” is the type of unpredictable and manic video to be expected from MGMT. It briefly features Henry Winkler, so they earn some cool points.

Bello on Bulger: The jury gets the case

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 6, 2013 12:31 PM

A total of 32 charges have been levied against Whitey Bulger, as the trial winds down and the jury picks up the case. Globe deputy metro editor Mike Bello described how the process will work on RadioBDC this morning, and explained what the next steps could be.

The jury may not find him guilty on all 32 counts, but even if Bulger is found not guilty on some, others carry a sentence of life imprisonment, said Bello.

Listen to to learn more about the ongoing Bulger trial drama.

RadioBDC Sports: MLB suspensions and trade recap

Posted by Adam 12 August 5, 2013 03:18 PM

Quite a lot to cover this week with Chad Finn, Steve Silva, and Adam 12. At the time of this broadcast, MLB was about to hand down suspensions to players involved in the Biogenesis scandal. Listen.

Shortly after the segment, MLB suspended Alex Rodriguez for 211 games.

So there's that. And breakdowns of both Jake Peavy's first start in a Sox uni and Adam 12's first pitch at Fenway Park last week. Here's the video if you missed it.

Poor ball girl. Poor A-Rod. Just kidding. About A-Rod, that is.

Mumford & Sons 'Hopeless Wanderer' clip is the funniest thing you'll see all week

Posted by Adam 12 August 5, 2013 12:41 PM

Typically, an artist will reach some level of self-awareness on their sophomore album. Mumford & Sons have done just that with the release of their video for "Hopeless Wanderer" from their sophomore album 'Babel.' And they've done it by enlisting the talents of Ed Helms, Will Forte, Jason Sudekis, and Jason Bateman to stand in for the band and play up every stereotype Mumford & Sons have been shackled with.

The result is absolutely hilarious. Take a look.

We wouldn't be surprised if the buzz on this video causes the song to shoot to the top of The Social Countdown. Tune in weekdays at 5 to find out.

Bello on Bulger: Closing arguments begin

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 5, 2013 10:00 AM

Both the prosecution and defense teams will have three hours and 15 minutes, as closing arguments get underway this morning at the trial of accused mobster Whitey Bulger, reported Mike Bello on RadioBDC.

Federal prosecutor Fred Wyshack called Bulger "one of the most viscious, violent criminals ever to walk the streets of Boston," according to Bello, and alleged that he was "single-handedly" responsible for four murders.

It will be a very detailed closing, including showing a chart of the Winter Hill gang and Bulger's relationships therein, essentially a historical timeline of Boston organized crime over the course of four decades.

For more of Bello's analysis and reporting, including the next steps in the trial, listen to this morning's segment.

UPDATED Bello on Bulger: Defense continues

Posted by Alex Pearlman August 2, 2013 10:46 AM

Update 11:02 am: Whitey Bulger will not testify in his own defense.

It's anyone's guess whether Whitey Bulger will testify in his defense, said Mike Bello this morning. The accused mobster could take the stand at any time, but it's unclear if he will. However, Bulger has offered to give over $800,000 in cash found in the walls of his home in California to the families of two men he's accused of murdering.

The money isn't Bulger's to give away, though, said Bello, and it is considered evidence by the government.

Listen to more of Bello's analysis, including more information about hidden money, and what the dramatic end of the trial could look like.

Grrl Power Playlist - 07/31/13

Posted by Steph Mangan August 1, 2013 01:34 PM
It was almost overwhelming how much new music was released in the past week. In fact so many new songs were released, I couldn't fit them all into one hour. Songs that made the cut this week included the much-buzzed about track from Haim, a great new single from local grrls Potty Mouth, a grrl power anthem from Oh Land, and a new track from The Box Tiger's upcoming debut full-length.

The full playlist from this week's show is below.

Adam 12's first pitch at Fenway

Posted by Adam 12 August 1, 2013 12:13 PM

Hello, it's Adam 12, life-long baseball nerd and Red Sox fan. Most Sox fans only dream of throwing out the first pitch at a home game. I've now had that honor not once, but twice. I'm a lucky guy. And grateful.

If there's one rule of thumb, though, when I'm scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Red Sox game, it's this: IT WILL RAIN. I waited out a two hour rain delay last September before taking the field, was rained out completely last Thursday, and had to deal with a brief deluge before returning to the mound on Monday.

Not that I'm complaining. Everyone at Fenway Park was friendly and accommodating. Cam, the ball attendant who'd be catching my pitch, asked me what I'd be throwing. I said: "I'm not going to gun a fastball at you, but I will throw a strike." And I think that I did. Take a look.

Poor Cam. Did I throw it too hard? She claimed after the pitch that she should've practiced more, but maybe I should have. You can let me know in the comments.

Here's my first pitch from last September for comparison.

Mayor Joe Curtatone stops by...with donuts

Posted by Adam 12 August 1, 2013 12:04 PM

Our old friend and Mayor of Somerville Joe Curtatone stopped by today and--as usual--brought a friend along with him. This time, it was Union Square Donuts. So we had some coffee and donuts and a chat.

Thanks again for stopping by, Mayor Joe! And BIG thanks to Union Square Donuts!
