AEROSMITHIA.JPGGlobe staff writer Sarah Rodman checks in with this bit of news:

A surprising new name has entered into the mix to replace departed judge Simon Cowell on "American Idol": Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. Directly on the heels of the announcement that Ellen DeGeneres would be giving up her place at the Fox talent contest's judging table after just one season, reports surfaced that Jennifer Lopez has signed on and that Tyler might be coming on board as well. This was news to other members of the band, who played a show last night at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif. Backstage before the concert, guitarist Joe Perry, drummer Joey Kramer, bassist Tom Hamilton, and band manager Trudy Green all expressed no knowledge of Tyler?s potential new gig. (Tyler retains his own separate management.) While not ruling out the possibility, Perry did point out "This is Hollywood, so rumors and all that stuff gets spread around." Tyler was preparing for the show and unavailable for comment.
