$4,600. That was 1945, the last time the Sox started a season 0-6. Since we here at Culture Desk are always interested in the way we live, we were naturally interested in the way we used to live. Say, in 1945. Thanks to websites like this and this, here's a quick glimpse of the way things were:

Average wages per year: $2,400
Cost of a gallon of gas: 15 cents
Average cost for house to rent: $60 per month
A girl's doll house: $3.19
Average cost of a new car: $1,020
A fur coat $70
Men's shirt $2.50

We looked for a silver lining in all this, and the best thing we could find is that in 1945, this guy, Peter Gammons, was born. That has to be some sort of good omen, right?

Does Lady Gaga empower gay fans, or patronize them? And where'd I put the remote control? If you love knowing about the latest in movies, TV, music and social media - and analyzing the politics of The Apprentice - grab a seat with "Media Remix."
