After 18 years as principal dancer for the Boston Ballet, Larissa Ponomarenko has retired from the stage without fanfare. She gave her final performance May 8, dancing Helen Pickett's "Layli o Majnun" with Yury Yanowsky, the company said today.

But Ponomarenko isn't retiring from the Boston Ballet. Instead, she'll become a ballet master, an appointment announced by artistic director Mikko Nissinen.
