Amazon.com says its customers are now buying more e-books than print books for the first time, yet another sign of the unfolding publishing revolution.
In an announcement this week, Amazon said in July 2010, Kindle book sales had overtaken sales of hardcover books on its website. And six months after that, the company said Kindle books also surpassed paperbacks, "to become the most popular format on Amazon.com." (Tina Fey's book, at left, is No. 8 today. The news itself is not as shocking as the speed in which it happened. Amazon first began selling books in July 1995. The Kindle arrived in 2007. So after 12 years of selling print books, it only took four years for Kindle books to fly past. Amazon said that since April 1, for every 100 print books it sold, it sold 105 Kindle books.
Don't expect to stop seeing print books, however. This story in the New York Times today points out that e-books still are only 14 percent of all general consumer fiction and nonfiction books sold.
